Information about Leura
Though many people going to the Blue Mountains head straight for Katoomba, the town of Leura has become increasingly popular in recent years. Well-known for its beautiful gardens, the town plays host to the Leura Garden Festival and Leura Village fair each October, as the private grounds are opened up to the public.
If you’re more interested in “inside” pursuits, you’ll find the shopping inside the Leura Mall to be to your liking. With a perfect assortment of shops, restaurants, and galleries, you’re sure to walk out satisfied. Best of all, the traditional architecture of the town has been preserved by the City Council through legislative guidelines.
The best way to experience Leura is on foot. Start your journey on Sublime Point Road. Be sure to pause and admire the golf course here, one of the most beautiful in the world. You’ll also be able to make out the popular Fairmont Resort.
At the end of your walk on Sublime Point Road is (you guessed it), Sublime Point, almost 1000 meters above sea level. The view from this vantage point is sure to astound.
Continue your walk down to the end of Everglades Avenue, home to the Historic Everglades. This treasure is owned and preserved by the National Trust, and is open year round.
The Historic Everglades is chock-full of features, including graceful sandstone terraces, unique trees and shrubs, and plenty of areas to sit down for a quiet picnic.
After the Everglades, head to Gordon Falls Reserve, where you’re in store for another gorgeous vista, this time of the Jamison Valley. A short drive will bring you to Bridal Veil Lookout.
On Cliff Drive, pause to admire the Leura Cascades, home to a number of waterfalls, including the Leura, Linda, Lila, and Bridal Veil falls. This is another great place to set up shop for a picnic or BBQ. While you’re getting the coals going, send the kids off to the playground.
If you’re looking for total privacy, Mount Hay Road leads north to the stunningly secluded Mount Hay Region. After a visit to this spot and the surrounding area, you’re sure to understand why Leura has earned its nickname of “the Jewel in the Mountains Crown”.
