Information about Dubbo
A small town of approximately 30,000, Dubbo is located about 400 kilometers northwest of Sydney. The town was founded in 1846, and formally proclaimed a city in 1966. Much of the traffic it sees each day is a result of its geographic position; Dubbo is widely considered to be the “crossroads” of New South Wales. Brisbane lies to the north, Sydney to the east, Melbourne to the south, and Adelaide to the west. As such, most visitors arrive by car. Unfortunately, some have time to stop only to take advantage of Dubbo’s wide array of accommodation. For those who do decide to stay, though, there are a ton of activities to keep them busy!
Dubbo attracts all sorts of visitors, including families and solo travelers just passing through. The most popular time to visit is during the spring, summer, and fall months, though most attractions remain open throughout the year. If you’re looking for a great cultural experience, consider attending the Dubbo Jazz Festival, a staple in town for almost 20 years! The three-day festival is usually held in mid-August, with the sound of free music filling the streets. Another popular event is the Dubbo National Steer Show, a showcase of the local agriculture.
The town’s main attraction is the Taronga Western Plains Zoo, a vast open space through which thousands of animals freely roam. The Zoo doubles as a research facility, and is well known for numerous breeding programs, designed to bolster the ranks of endangered species. Most visitors stop to admire the magnificent rhinoceros’, and stay for the other animals, including monkeys, elephants, lions, and giraffes. The new Western Plains Cultural Center is also home to an Arts Center that is quickly growing in popularity among locals. Shopping is also available at the Orana Mall, which holds major national chains such as Target and Woolworth’s.
Dubbo is also famous for its architecture. Famous examples include the Lands Office, built in the 1880’s. This is considered to be a classic showing of Victorian architecture. In the center of the city, numerous homes exhibit the California Bungalow fashion, popular early in the 20th century.
Those staying in Dubbo will find accommodation for every budget. From camping to luxury resorts, Dubbo has it all. Hotels and motels are spread throughout the town, including some at the outskirts that mostly serve the truckers passing through on the way to Sydney, Melbourne, or Adelaide. Likewise, choices for restaurants abound: budget choices include diners and cafes, while more expensive options are available to those looking for something a bit fancier.
