Information about Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is perhaps best known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, a stunning archipelago of 74 distinct beach spots. Before you board your yacht, however, take the time to explore this exciting town.
Airlie is a beach town through and through, with that carefree, laidback atmosphere you’ve come to expect from surfer spots across Australia. Make sure to spend some relaxing time in the Airlie Beach Lagoon, a saltwater swimming area that attracts both locals and visitors alike. Virtually everything here is done outdoors, including cooking done on barbeques that are located in virtually every park. Even fine dining is done alfresco, with several fantastic options offering fresh seafood probably caught that very day.
As night falls, Airlie Beach really comes alive, with bars and nightclubs thumping along to techno beats. Backpackers and travelers come together to party away the night, and the irresistible energy convinces many visitors to put off their trip to the Whitsunday Islands for just one more day.
There are also a number of communities around Airlie Beach that are well worth a visit. North of town is Bowen, with beaches that are just as beautiful as Airlie and quieter to boot. Go to Shute Harbour and Abel Point Marina to gawk at some of the incredible cruising yachts. Perhaps most enjoyable is the drive itself along the jagged coastline, as you spot distant Whitsunday islands every once in a while. One of the best ways to experience the area is on a rented scooter, zipping along the coastal road and stopping whenever you feel you have the chance for that perfect camera shot.
You’ve probably started to realize why Airlie Beach is one of Australia’s hottest holiday destinations, but the only way to find out for sure is by visiting. If you’re coming from afar, the best way to travel is by plane into Prosepherine Airport, about a thirty minute drive away.
