    Information about Victor Harbor

Approximately 80 KM south of Adelaide, Victor Harbor is the population center of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The economy largely revolves around tourism, though traditionally agriculture and fishing provided the majority of income for residents. Today, during the summer the city is a very popular destination for visitors looking for sun and surf.

With a population of about 13,000, the term “city” doesn’t immediately spring to mind for this municipality. Take into account, however, that this number swells to 50,000 during the summer, and you’ll likely change your tune. Interestingly, due to an error made by the Surveyor General in the early part of the 20th century, Victor Harbor misses the characteristic u founding most spellings of the word harbour.

Victor Harbor is perhaps most well known for its incredible whale watching opportunities. During July and August, southern right whales appear mere meters off the coast to give birth. The most popular spots to view these magnificent sea creatures are the Bluff, Granite Island, and Waitpinga. The whales have maintained an “up and down” relationship with Victor Harbor over the past two hundred years. Throughout the 1800’s, the southern rights were fiercely hunted by seamen operating out of the port, primarily for the valuable oil that could be used to illuminate dark homes. Estimated to number approximately 100,000 before major hunting began, today less than 10,000 roam the ocean. In an encouraging sign that nature forgives, however, these whales returned to the harbor in the 1990’s, allowing the incredible nature experience that tourists enjoy today.

Whales aren’t the only unusual creatures that make their appearance near Victor Harbor. The world’s smallest penguin, popularly called “little penguins”, also dot the coastline. Amazingly, these animals are only about 35 cm tall! This is one of the few places on the globe where penguins exist in a natural state so close to an urban center.

If you’d rather become a creature of the sea yourself, rent a surfboard and hit the waves. Waitpinga and Parsons beaches have some of the most reliable surf in all of Australia. There are numerous spots for beginners as well.

Victor Harbor is a very popular destination with couples looking for a romantic getaway. To accommodate these visitors, a number of excellent bed and breakfasts have sprung up all over town. These B&B’s aren’t the only kind of accommodation available, however. There are options to suit every visiting family’s need, including hotels, motels, and camping. There are also several resorts if you’re looking for more of a beach vacation.

For a one of a kind ocean experience, consider Victor Harbor for your next vacation. With incredible marine biography set amidst a beautiful setting, this convenient town offers a great spot to take some time for yourself.
