    Information about Strahan

For trips along the scenic Gordon River, Strahan is your point of embarkation. Day-long journeys float through complete wilderness rainforest, with stops at interesting convict ruins on Sarah Island. For a more macro view, charter one of the small tourist planes that buzz over the area every day.

Strahan is the major harbour of Tasmania’s west coast, and center of the region’s World Heritage Area.

The town is located right on the harbour’s northern edge. A short 50 kilometre cruise takes you the length of Macquarie Harbour along the Gordon River. If you’d prefer a journey on land, the West Coast Wilderness Railway climbs over a steep mountain range to bring you to Queenstown. For the most exciting option of all, hop aboard a sea plane to try to find some of the 1000 year old Huon pine that still dots the forest.

If you want to enjoy the area under your own power, you could also kayak along the waterways, or walk the length of Ocean Beach.

Huon pine was once the primary driver of the local economy, and you can still find elegant artifacts built from this resilient timber in local craft shops in town.

Captain James Kelly has the distinction of being the first European to navigate the opening to the Harbour, popularly referred to as Hell’s Gates by the convicts on Sarah Island. The station was operating as early as 1822, and for a long time held the reputation of being Australia’s worst prison.

One thing to remember is your all-weather gear, because Strahan is famous for its wild weather. To reach the town, drive four and a half hours from Hobart on the Lyell Highway.
