Information about Apollo Bay
Right in the center of the Great Ocean Road, and nestled in the foothills of the Otways, Apollo Bay is commonly referred to by both locals and tourists as “Paradise by the Sea”. With great swimming beaches set against the backdrop of the Otway hills, you’ll love the laid back lifestyle here.
The beach is the center of activity all year round. Enjoy swimming in pristine water, or kayak among the local seal population. You could charter a boat or join one of the deep-sea fishing expeditions, which come back each afternoon chock full of fish.
For sunset, there’s no better spot than Marriners Lookout Road. Just east of Apollo Bay, you’ll find Cape Patton, another location famous for its scenic vistas. For the best views of all, hop aboard one of the charter flights that take off from the local airport and see it all from the air.
After tourism, fishing still holds as the most important local industry, and Apollo Bay has the seafood restaurants to prove it. After dinner, stroll through the town’s many gift shops and galleries, where you’ll find unique presents to bring friends and family from back home.
For a taste of history, take to the Otways to discover Australia’s oldest lighthouse. These hills are also home to some great walks, many of which reward you with a waterfall at the end of your journey. For something really different, walk along the trees on the Otway Fly, we’re you’ll enjoy a view unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Just 200 kilometres from Melbourne, Apollo Bay is reached via a beautiful four hour drive along the Great Ocean Road. If you prefer speed over scenery, take the road through Forrest and Birregurra, which will take you less than three hours. Alternatively, you could also travel via coach.
