    Information about Bright

Bright is a small town in Victoria, approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. This interior destination is well known for its scenic beauty, especially in the fall months as the leaves turn to brilliant gold, orange, and brown. That’s not all: when autumn makes its way to winter, the ski season begins. This is one of the only places in Australia where snow falls heavily enough for skiing, and people flock to the powder in droves. Indeed, the Victorian Alps are widely regarded as the premier skiing destination on the entire Continent.

Bright is the epitome of a small ski town, similar to Aspen in the United States and Queenstown in New Zealand. Less than 3,000 people make their home in Bright, according to the 2006 census. The town was founded in 1860, and played a key role in the Gold Rush of the late 19th century.

Today, residents make their living providing services to the thousands of visitors that come each year. Many of these tourists come as couples looking for a romantic getaway, so it isn’t surprising that a number of bed and breakfasts have popped up over the years. Indeed, a wide range of accommodation exists, including camping, motels, hotels, and resorts. The last of these are found in particularly high numbers up in the mountains.

Skiing isn’t all that Bright has to offer. In the spring and summer months, adventure sports take over the menu. Mountain biking is one of the most popular, along with road bicycling, with races held throughout the year. Look up, and you’re bound to see a sky filled with hang gliders soaring through the air. The most popular site for launch is Mystic Point, and many picnickers set up shop in the surrounding area to marvel at these daredevils. Of course, bush walking is also a popular activity, and a number of trails snake their way through the mountains offering great views, as well as opportunities to see wild life.

The buildings in the centre of Bright are also worth taking the time to explore. Many of the older structures are great examples of mid 19th century architecture, including an old timber house constructed of wood brought all the way from England by ship. Other notable buildings include the Bright & District Historical Museum and the Park Street Court House.

Six miles south is Wandiligong, a tiny hamlet that offers a view into the past. The Historical Society of this town has gone to great lengths to maintain the older buildings. Like Bright itself, this is a great place to relax in the mountains.
