Information about Dandenong Ranges
The Dandenong are a set of mountains that lie slightly east of Melbourne. It’s not the height of these mountains that impresses (the tallest is only 633 metres). People come here for the relaxation that comes less than an hour away from the center of Australia’s second largest city.
The main feature of these mountains is the Dandenong Ranges National Park. This park is set right in the middle of the urban center, and split into five main sections. The Doongalla Forest holds Mount Dandenong itself, while the Ferntree Gully National Park is famous for One Tree Hill, at the top of an extremely steep 2.5 KM hike.
Unlike the mountains further to the north, Mt. Dandenong doesn’t see snow very often. The recent exception was Christmas Day in 2006, when a rare summer snow shower fell. At the top of the mountain, diners enjoy the cuisine at the SkyHigh restaurant, as well as views of the surrounding mountains. This site also holds other attractions, including the Puffing Billy Railway, the English Garden, SkyHigh Maze, and the Giant’s Chair.
On the Eastern slope of the mountain, the William Ricketts Sanctuary provides a quiet space for reflection. The 92 sculptures on the grounds (all crafted by William Ricketts) express the sentiment that man is connected with nature on a deeper level than onemight think.
There are four main towns in the Dandenong Range: Olinda, Sassafras, Mount Dandenong, and Kallista. Of the four, the largest is Mt. Dandenong, settled in 1893. Today, the majority of the commerce in town centers on tourism, including several boutique fashion shops that cater to these visitors. Aside from this, the town’s main feature is a series of television and radio antennas that serve Melbourne.
There isn’t a set commercial center for the town of Mt. Dandenong. Instead, shops dot the forest roads, partially obscured from view. This goes a great distance in maintaining the rustic nature of Mt. Dandenong. Accommodation is provided in a similar fashion, with small cottages spread throughout the area.
The Dandenongs aren’t an imposing set of mountains meant to blow a visitor away. Instead, this is a peaceful place to take a break from work and stress in Melbourne. By design, the area is still relatively undeveloped, so don’t expect to see all of the glitz and glamour common to a place like Surfer’s Paradise. If you’ve been searching for a spot close to Melbourne to get away, this might just be your perfect destination.
