    Information about Albany

Albany is one of the most unique cities in all of Australia. There are two things that make it particularly special: the convict history that shaped the place, as well as the dramatic scenery that awaited these hardy souls upon their arrival. On the coast of Western Australia, Albany lies about 5 hours south of Perth.

Take a trip almost two hundred years to a time of intrigue. The scene is still set by the same convict jails and taverns that were built in the mid 19th century. The area was discovered at the turn of the 19th century, but wasn’t until 1826 that settlers founded Albany. Over 50 colonial buildings show you what life was like for those who lived here then. Instead of cells, however, the buildings are now filled with shops, galleries and restaurants. Follow the 30 minute self-guided Amity Trail for an in depth tour.

You also won’t want to miss the old whaling station. The marina is also home to the Brig Amity, a detailed replica of the ship that brought Albany its first (shackled and unhappy) residents.

Another attraction is the Gap, famous for its 24-metre ocean drop. Don’t forget your camera, as this is one of the prime photo ops in all of Albany. Natural Bridge is another sight to see in the area.

Another quirky feature of the town is Dog Rock, an imposing wind farm. From here, it’s only a short way to the Middletown Beach boardwalk trail, a short jaunt that provides fantastic views of the sound.

In 1978, the whalers hung up their harpoons, but the area is still dependent on these magnificent creatures for its livelihood. Today, whale-watching is the most popular activity for tourists. You’ll appreciate the incredible humpbacks and southern rights that swim right up to shore.

Divers will also want to breach the surface to explore the HMAS Swan, resting on the ocean floor just offshore.
