Information about Dunsborough
Overlooking the idyllic clear waters of Geographe Bay, Dunsbourough is one of Western Australia’s most popular vacation destinations.
Only three hours from Perth, the town boasts scenic coastal walking trails that lead you to quiet beach coves. You’re also apt to encounter bottlenose dolphins playing just off the coast if you’re lucky. Within a short drive’s distance are some of the Western Australia’s best beaches, including Meelup, Eagle Bay, and Bunker Bay.
Each of these beaches face north into the Indian Ocean, resulting in gentle waves. Best of all, you’ll have these beaches virtually to yourself. The solitude you’ll enjoy make these beaches a perfect place for a picnic.
With the HMAS Swan, Southern Hemisphere’s largest accessible wreck dive, Dunsborough also qualifies as a great scuba diving destination.
Dunsbourough has been around since the 1870’s, but up until the 1950’s it was little more than a few shacks on the beach. You’d hardly believe it today, with its lively arts and music scene. The restaurants aren’t bad either, with several winning national awards in recent years.
You’ll also love the wine, as 220 vineyards and 80 wineries make their home in the nearby Margaret River region. That’s pretty impressive, considering the first vines were planted only 30 years ago. With intense chardonnays, impressive cabernets, gentle merlots and rich Semillons, every wine enthusiast can find a variety to suit their palate.
Children can also indulge in an ice cream, or take a tour of the chocolate factory that continues to operate in the middle of town.
You’ll also find a number of guided tours available, including photography, canoeing, camel, wine and cave tours.
Up at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, take in the maritime history of the area while keeping an eye out for passing whales as they cruise down the coast. Whale watching tours are quite popular, leaving daily from the harbor in Dunsborough.
There’s a wide range of accommodation here, from luxury resorts to more casual bed and breakfasts.
