Information about Margaret River
Both the namesake of a town and river, Margaret River is located about 300 kilometers south of Perth. The majority of people arrive by car, though bus service is also available. This area is a major site for tourism, with over 500,000 visitors each year. Most come for the beautiful beaches lined alongside the river, which begins about 45 kilometers east, and flows into the Indian Ocean 9 kilometers past town. The town really didn’t come into existence until the 1920’s, when the Australian government made a concerted effort to populate the surrounding area.
Considering that Margaret River is a relatively small town, the range of activities offered in the area is truly amazing. Visitors hardly have a chance to relax for fear of missing a worthwhile outing! Among the most popular activities are whale watching, vinery tours, and surfing. For those more “culturally inclined”, Margaret River also has a number of museums and art galleries.
Margaret River is a popular destination throughout the year. During summer, tourists flock here to take advantage of the gorgeous scenery. If you opt to come during winter, however, you’re most likely to see the migration of the whales from Antarctica. These magnificent creatures tend to pass Margaret River from May through September.
The Margaret River Wine Region is one of the major centers of production in all of Australia, responsible for producing almost a quarter of all grapes grown in the nation. Indeed, some varieties of grapes grown here are considered to be among the besting the world. Along with tourism, the wine industry has been responsible for a sharp turn in the fortunes of Margaret River. Until the 1980’s, the region was mired in economic hardship. With the explosion of vineyards onto the scene (and the accompanying boom in tourism), Margaret River has turned into a major destination in Western Australia.
Visitors may come for the wine, but they stay for the natural beauty of Margaret River. Many people are stunned by the incredible caves in the area. Approximately 150 caves dot the area. The three most visited are Lake, Mammoth, and Jewel. Each offer visitors a guide MP3 tour through the cave.
Accordingly, facilities have sprung up to accommodate all of these tourists. Visitors will find a ton of places to lay their heads, including a number of recent self-contained accommodation options. Likewise, there are restaurants to suit every taste, including many establishments offering international selections.
Margaret River is a great option for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Less than 300 kilometers from Perth, you’ll feel a world away while relaxing in this great destination.
