Hamilton was settled very early (circa 1812), becoming in colonial times the centre of this district because its excellent land and climate produced good food and agriculture, plus other resources in the area aided a strong local economy. It was a good place to live.
Now Hamilton is an 'historic township' on the road to the west coast, an hour from central Hobart, small, but still a good place to live. Hamilton is a good spot to experience the real Tasmania and an ideal stopping place either to or from the West. Within the township itself there are 30 heritage listed buildings and sites, and numerous attractive gardens.
