Information about Ballarat
As Victoria’s largest inland city, Ballarat is a holiday spot well worth visiting. The town has its origins in the gold rush of the 19th century, and you’ll find Victorian buildings and parks that are a testament to this rich history. Indeed, at Sovereign Hill you’ll be taken back to this time, in a living museum filled with period actors in dusty streets. This is actually the site of the largest deposit of alluvial gold on Earth, which explains the rich architecture that graces the wide avenues that roll throughout the city. Top that off with great parks and gardens, present all along the self-guided Heritage Walk (provided by the visitor information centre), and you’re certain to come away impressed with the history of Ballarat.
One of Ballarat’s most primetime attractions is the gold mining settlement up on Sovereign Hill. While the gold (first discovered in the 1850s) has finally dried up, it has been replaced by a 35 acre site complete with hotels, shops, a theatre, and two underground mines that are open to the public. Be sure to take in the Blood on the Southern Cross sound and light show, a dramatic exhibition based on the Eureka Rebellion.
Across the road is the Gold Museum, with an impressive store of gold nuggets and deposits, as well as a selection of gold ornaments and coins.
Ballarat’s Fine Art Gallery is the oldest and largest regional gallery in all of Australia. Of particular interest is the original Eureka flag. Of course, there’s also a solid collection of great Australian art. Be sure to attend a production at Her Majesty’s Theatre, around since 1875.
Take a pleasant stroll through the enchanting Ballarat Botanical Gardens, located on the western end of Lake Wendouree. These were the first botanic gardens built inland in Victoria. Each March, flower enthusiasts flock here to enjoy the Ballarat Begonia Festival.
The children will love Ballarat Wildlife Park, with its impressive stock of koalas and kangaroos. One great way to see the park is by bike; you’re sure to see more wildlife if you cover that much ground. Back in town, there’s a great selection of award-winning restaurants, as well as some less fancy but still delectable cafes and pubs.
Ballarat is just one hour away from Melbourne along the Western Highway. Daily service by both rail and coach is available.
