    Information about Bendigo

For a real taste of Victoria, head inland to Bendigo, an idyllic regional city that makes a great gateway to the area’s rich cultural heritage. Gold era architecture is the name of the game here, set amidst cafes, art galleries, and antique stores.
The scene is perfect for a short stroll. You’ll walk right past the Alexandra Fountain, as well as a magnificent former post office that is now home to the Bendigo Visitor Information. All that walking will leave you tired, so take a rest in Rosalind Park, complete with an open air fernery, cascade waterfall, and an observatory open year round to the public.

Up View Street you’ll find Bendigo’s arts district. The main attraction here is the Bendigo Art Gallery, founded in 1887. This exhibit holds precious pieces dating all the way back to the 1850’s. Even older is the Performing Arts Centre, built in 1873. The area is also home to plenty of smaller galleries.

For a taste of Bendigo’s golden past, descend over one hundred metres into the Central Deborah Gold Mine. Afterwards, hop onboard Bendigo’s talking tram and have a look at the oldest and longest Chinese Dragon in the world, Sun Loong, housed in the Chinese Dragon Museum. Each year in April, Sun Loong makes his way down the street as the main attraction of the Bendigo Easter Festival Parade.

Bendigo is also well-known for its extensive and impressive collection of wineries. In particular, wine enthusiasts come here to sample some of the tastiest reds in all of Australia. The majority of the wineries are family-run affairs, staffed with pleasant old souls. Both the Bendigo Wine Festival (April) and Bendigo Heritage Uncorked (October) showcase everything the area has to offer.

Only two hours from Melbourne on the Calder Highway, Bendigo is accessible daily via train service.
